Manutius vs Word and Pages

Manutius replaces the word processor for the book itself: the page is the trim size, the running heads and gutter take care of themselves, and the EPUB and the cover come out of the same file. Word and Pages can produce a PDF at a book's trim size if you know the settings, and most manuscripts start there. Here is what the difference costs, and when a book app pays for itself.

The short version

Choose Manutius if you are publishing the book yourself and want the print PDF, the EPUB and the cover without a formatting stage, or if you simply want to see the real pages while you write. It replaces the word processor for the book and still exports a Word manuscript whenever someone asks for one.

Stay in Word or Pages if you are writing the manuscript for an agent, an editor or a traditional publisher, who will typeset it themselves. Standard manuscript format is exactly what those tools are for, and you probably already own one.

Where Manutius is better

The book. A word processor can be coaxed into producing book pages, and the coaxing never ends: every section break, every running head exception, every gutter change when the page count crosses a KDP threshold, every chapter opener's spacing, checked again after each revision. Manutius makes each of those a setting that applies to the whole book and shows the result on the page in front of you. Then it writes the EPUB and the cover that a word processor cannot. For a self-published book that is the difference between a formatting weekend and a menu item.

Where Word and Pages are better

Everything that is not a book. Collaboration in real time, tracked changes with an editor, tables, every document type, every platform, and a price that is often zero. If a publisher is typesetting the book, a word processor is the right tool and a book app is an indulgence.

Questions

Can I format a book for KDP in Word?

Yes. Set the page size to the trim size, mirrored margins with the gutter KDP requires for your page count, section breaks for the front matter and each chapter, different first-page headers so chapter openers have no running head, and export a PDF with fonts embedded. It works, and every one of those settings has to be re-checked after every edit.

Can Word export an EPUB?

No. Microsoft’s list of Word save formats does not include EPUB. Pages can export an EPUB. Manutius exports both an EPUB and a Word document.

Do I still need Word if I use Manutius?

Only if an editor wants a Word file, and Manutius exports one in standard manuscript format with the comments and footnotes carried across. It also imports a Word manuscript and splits it into chapters.

Is Pages good enough for a novel?

For the manuscript, certainly. For the printed book, Pages can set a custom page size and mirrored margins and can export an EPUB, but running heads that skip chapter openers, page-bottom footnotes that match the print, the KDP gutter rule and the cover are all manual work or not possible.
