A small polish update: interface refinements and minor fixes. Free for everyone who has Manutius.
Version 1.1 27 September 2026
The first update after launch: thirteen additions from the first weeks of feedback, all free for everyone who has Manutius. Focus mode, chapter versions, comments, true page-bottom footnotes, hardcover covers and Word export lead the list.
Writing
- Find & Replace (⌘F): in the chapter or the whole book, with match case and whole words. Replace All can be undone.
- Headings and subheadings (⇧⌘H, ⌥⇧⌘H), bulleted and numbered lists (⇧⌘U, ⇧⌘7). They print, export and show in the EPUB.
- Comments (⇧⌘M): highlight text and leave a note to yourself. Never printed; ⌥⌘M jumps to the next one. Claude can read them.
- Focus mode (⇧⌘F): the panels slide away and only the paragraph you are writing stays fully inked.
- Repeated words (⌃⌘R, off by default): a dotted underline when a distinctive word comes back within 80 words. For revision passes.
Chapters
- Versions: File → Save Version of This Chapter (⌥⌘V). Compare word by word, restore, or go back to the automatic version saved before Claude rewrote a chapter.
- Scenes under each chapter in the sidebar: click to jump, drag to reorder.
- Words today in the status bar, and the last two weeks under the book goal.
Design
- Six chapter-heading styles (Classic, Small caps, Uppercase, Big numeral, Rules, Plain) and six scene-break ornaments.
- Footnotes at the bottom of the page (Design → Chapters → Notes). Identical in the editor and the PDF.
- Hardcover covers: Design → Cover → Binding. KDP case-laminate wrap, hinge and spine.
Export
- Word document (.docx) in manuscript format, with footnotes, comments, images and lists, for editors and beta readers.
- Preview ebook (⌘3): page through the EPUB on a reader-shaped screen.
Also
- Every control has a quick hover tip.
- New Claude tools:
get_comments,list_versions,move_scene,export_docx.
Known limitation: with page footnotes, a paragraph longer than a page that has no italics, note or comment above the page break needs one internal split, and ⌘Z may not undo typing in its tail.
Version 1.0 26 September 2026
The first public release of Manutius: a Mac app for writing a book directly on the pages it will be printed on, with the print PDF, the ebook and the cover coming out of the same file.
- Writing on real print pages: chapters flow onto pages as you type, with chapter openers, running heads, page numbers, drop caps, widows and orphans handled like a typesetter would. Whole-book view shows every spread.
- Design panel: book typefaces, size and line spacing, trim sizes from 5×8 to 7×10, margins with a KDP margin check, and a one-click large-print edition.
- Front and back matter: half title, title page, copyright, dedication, contents, part pages, “Also by” and “About the author”, one checkbox each.
- Images and endnotes: pictures with captions that stay put, notes numbered automatically and printed per chapter or at the back.
- Print PDF and EPUB export: exact trim size with embedded fonts for KDP and IngramSpark, and a clean reflowable ebook for Kindle, Apple Books and Kobo.
- Covers: the spine computed from the page count and paper, a full-wrap print PDF and a store JPG.
- Proofing and Listen: Harper spelling and grammar in four Englishes and a natural Kokoro voice reading from the cursor, all offline.
- Plan panel, backups and Word import: word goal and pace, chapter targets, synopsis and cast; autosave with a recovery copy; .docx import split into chapters.
- Claude, if you want it: an optional side panel and Claude Code tools that can read and, with your permission, edit the manuscript. Every edit has Undo.
- Licensing and auto-update: a 14-day trial, one license for up to three Macs, and updates delivered inside the app.
