Manutius vs Atticus

Manutius is a Mac app built around one idea: the pages you write on should be the pages that print. Atticus is the writing-and-formatting app that runs everywhere, in a browser, for a one-time price. The two overlap more than most pairs on this site, so the differences are worth being precise about.

The short version

Choose Manutius if you write on a Mac and want the printed page in front of you the whole time rather than in a preview pane, plus the things that come from treating the book as a book from the start: real page counts as you write, true page-bottom footnotes, the print cover and hardcover wrap computed from the actual pages, chapter versions, offline proofing and read-aloud.

Choose Atticus if you are not on a Mac, if you move between several machines, or if you want one file that opens in a browser anywhere and still works offline. Its formatting is good, its price is one-time, and it exports EPUB, PDF and Word.

Where Manutius is better

Fidelity and finishing. Because the page is the editor, what you see is not an approximation: the footnote sits at the bottom of the page it is on, a widow is visible the moment it appears, the page count in the status bar is the page count of the PDF. Then the cover: Manutius reads the page count and the paper and draws the full wrap, paperback or hardcover, with the spine, the safe areas and the barcode box, so there is no trip to a calculator and no cover that comes back a hair too narrow. Add versions, comments, offline proofing and a voice that reads the chapter back, and it is a more complete place to write, on the one platform it runs on.

Where Atticus is better

Reach and flexibility. It runs on every operating system and follows you between machines, it has custom trim sizes and a theme builder, and its ebook covers can be made in the app. If you write on a Windows laptop and a Chromebook, or you sell templates and themes, there is no contest.

Questions

Is Manutius an Atticus alternative for Mac?

Yes, with one big difference in approach. Atticus writes in a clean editor and shows the formatted book in a preview. Manutius has no separate preview: the editor is the typeset page. Manutius also makes the print cover with the spine calculated, which Atticus does not.

Which is cheaper?

Atticus is $147 once. Manutius is $199 once for lifetime, or $15 a month or $99 a year. Both have a way to try before committing: Atticus a 30-day money-back guarantee, Manutius a 14-day free trial.

I use Windows. Which should I choose?

Atticus. Manutius is Mac only.

Does Atticus make print covers?

Its help center says no. Atticus gives you the page count and trim size to enter into the printer’s cover calculator, and the cover is made elsewhere. Its cover templates are for ebook covers.
